My
husband and I are animal lovers and former “parents” to two labs,
Gumbo and Okra (who, incidentally, had complete run of our yard).
Consequently, we didn’t venture into this yard much afterwards.
However, after Gumbo went to “Doggie Heaven,” we decided to take back
our yard, unbeknownst to Okra.
With grand ideas to create a landscape design with a clear pallet, we
started the grim task of ripping everything out, fence by fence, limb by
limb, right down to the last blade of grass! There was only one problem
when done…., we both drew a complete
blank when
it came to ideas and realized we needed the assistance of a landscape
designer. So we solicited the
help of Greta, our designer, and together we created a little slice of
Heaven, here on earth, on a 1/5th of an acre!
After
six years of planting in every nook and cranny, we ran out of space
and had no choice but to continue our garden
therapy by planting in reusable nursery containers.
Little did we know but this is when the business began to “bud.”
Apparently needing a lot of "garden
therapy," we now propagate over 200 different kinds of
landscape plants from
cuttings, division, or seed, in what was our former dog run. We propagate without
a greenhouse, so our plants already stand the test of time in all
kinds of weather year round.
Since
Annie teaches school during the daytime, her husband came up with the idea
for a business name, and it stuck. Hence, "Annie
Appleseed" broke
ground!
 A
year after our business "took
root," we "branched
off" into vermi-composting our kitchen trash using It is not
hard to become a fan of those voracious little trash hounds! They
multiply like rabbits... and eat half their weight in food each day! All
the while they create highly nutritious worm casts, or in
layman’s terms, worm poop!!!
Aside from the fact that our garden beds contain our compost, we now sell
this “living compost” filled
with worms locally. Worms condition and aerate your soil and give
it maximum water holding capacity!
This
might sound a little "seedy,"
but we "branched
out" in yet another direction. Because we secretly
belong to “Dead Headers Anonymous,” a
joyful little group that LOVES to prune flowers and collect seed, we now
create ALL OCCASION Custom Flower seed and Tea packets
for wedding party favors/birth announcements and
this "seemed the perfect marriage!"
